Updates!

2009.08.19 Updated main page commentary.

Updated minor aspects in the Registry.
2009.08.15 Registry completely revised and updated.

Complete re-indexing of the photo archives are underway; ALL L-17 photos will be online (correctly attributed and rights-flagged) within the next few weeks.

Created L-17.ORG Facebook page!
2009.8.3 After a near 4 year hiatus I'm back in the air! My L-17B completed annual on 6/30/09 and I did my first airshow at Arlington, WA in early July. It's been great to be back in the air and to reconnect with the L-17 community!

- Changed main page lead photo.

- North American L-17A 47-1329 located.

- Ryan L-17B 48-974 changed owners.

2008.3.15

It's been an interesting few years. I parked my L-17B in April of 2006, planning to start a wing split to replace the fuel tank crossover and some other maintenance. In early August of '06, I had a distal bicep tendon rupture and repair - I have to tell you, that's just not fun.  Started a new job in October of '06 that has been very absorbing...and here we sit in '08.

2006.2.16 Yes, two updates in a week! I'm making some time to sort through a ton of information and I expect to put up some great new content over the next month or so.  I'm also working on a site redesign and navigation system change to make it easier to get around.
2006.2.11 Once again it's been a long time since an update.  As Don Henley says "A lot of things have happened since the last time we spoke - some of them are funny, and some of them ain't no joke."
  • L-17A NAA Serial Numbers have been verified!  This is the culmination of years of research - many thanks to Navion Aircraft Inc. for their dedication to preserving NAvion heritage!

  • Registry updated with L-17A, L-17C and QL-17 registrations.

2003.8.16 Finally, an update!  Real life has intruded over the last couple of months, but I hope this update was worth the wait.

Gallery sections have been revised to accommodate my ongoing struggles with FrontPage photo galleries.  The L-17B galleries have been split into 3 sections; hopefully this will overcome the limitation on the number of photos in a gallery.

L-17B

Model 72 page updated with incredible new pictures and information, including new pictures from Mark Cyrier and the Vought Aircraft Industries Retiree Club!

Links Added:

  • Added link on main page and links to Jim Stegall's book "Grashopper Pilot" - a must read!
  • Army Aviation Heritage Foundation(www.armyav.org)
  • Steve Andrues and Bill Clark's NAvion Restoration Project.  While not an L-17, it's a great rescue of a "lost" bird.
2003.5.15 A history section has been added to Glenn Murphy's 48-944 page based on information from the Air Force Historical Research Agency.  I'd like to offer a very special thank you to Archie DiFante, Archivist for his assistance with a very large request.

The Unites States Air Force Museum has identified their L-17A as 47-1347, although it is painted in the colors of a USAF ROTC L-17B, 48-928.

2003.4.27 I know it's been a while since I've updated; unfortunately my "real job" has intruded quite a bit over the last few months.  For those of you that have emailed or written, thanks for your patience.  I will be traveling now through mid-May, so again please be patient with information requests.  Thanks!

I have added some excellent information this month, and I hope to be updating the galleries and historical section in mid-May.  I've collected a great deal of information and I'm still sorting through it.

Fixed North American Aviation and P-51 links on the Main Page.

Courtesy of the Museum of Flight archives, we now have operational photos of SEVEN more L-17s! Added to the L-17A Gallery:

  • 47-1308
  • 47-1317
  • 47-1329
  • 47-1341
  • 47-1344
  • 47-1363
  • 47-1371
2003.3.8 Fixed a whole bunch of broken links due to file name changes.

Changed photo on Main Page.

Added a Link to the Yahoo Group Navion Pilots & Owners.

Added more pictures of Tim Conrad's Microsoft Flight Simulator L-17B - it's getting close!

2003.2.26 Added a page with pictures of Tim Conrad's Microsoft Flight Simulator L-17B!

Repaired Model 72 links.

2003.2.24 Moved and renamed pictures; general quality/organization update.

Removed Owner Services section due to lack of interest.  Any L-17 owner or enthusiast is still able to create their home page at any time.

2003.2.22 48-1007 individual page updated with airshow dates!

A.J. Jackson Collection scans have arrived! A new QL-17 Gallery has been created with 47-1334. The photo of the drone also confirms L-17 fitting of the heated pitot kit found on many L-17s, including my own, 48-1007.  Updated the Authenticity page to reflect this finding.

We have tentative confirmation of the total number of L-17s from the November, 1948 Flying Magazine:

"The air force has ordered 158 Ryan Navions, bringing the total procurement of this type to 241, plus components and spares with a dollar value equal to another 60 complete Navions. The Navion is designated L-17A and L-17B and is used as an "all-service" plane by the Air Force."

The spares mentioned used to be available via the Civil Air Patrol Depot, but they no longer have any parts (verified) and have closed down as the CAP now operates exclusively civilian aircraft (Cessna 172s, etc.).

The Model 72 page was updated to reflect USAF Museum policies on reproduction of information from their site.  The photo was removed, and a link to their site was created. Work is underway with the T-34 Mentor type club to find pictures and more information. Information was also added from the Raytheon Aircraft Company.

2003.2.17 Added 47-1333 to the Registry. Added Norm Zehr's email address to his story in the Personal History section. Added the Army Aviation Museum's L-17B 48-1046 to the Registry, thanks to Art Laguna!  Updated Contributor Honor Roll.

I've located photos of QL-17 Drone 47-1334 and L-17B 48-932; scans are on their way from the A.J. Jackson Collection.

Research letters are out to the Air Force Museum and the Air Force Historical Research Agency.  I hope for responses by the end of the month.

2003.2.13 Updated Main Page photo. Updated Model 72 section with new information from a variety of sources.  Good hints from Dudley Cate, which lead to more research with the Vought Aircraft Industries Retiree Club.
2003.2.11 Updated verbiage on the main page to clarify that the NAvion came before the L-17.  Thanks to Raleigh Morrow of NAvion Skies for bringing it to my attention.  Updated the individual page for 48-1007, adding the USAF Data Card and Service History.
2003.2.10 Still having major problems with FrontPage Photo Galleries.  Some photos may be missing from the Galleries; I'm working on it.  Looks like I need to manually create the Galleries due to this system limitation on the number of photos.
2003.2.8 48-1077 added to the L-17B Gallery and Registry, and created an individual page.

Updated the individual page for 48-982 with new pictures!

Added a Contributors page to thank everyone that's helped build this site.

Significantly updated Model 72 page with information and research.  Special thanks to Marine pilot Tom Rochford, who flew the Model 72 in the selection competition.

2003.2.2 Not a whole lot to add here, but I wanted to get an update out.  As you may be aware, I had some challenges with 48-1007 and toyed with the idea of selling my dream.  With the help of friends, I've managed to address the issues and get back in the air.  Research and updates have taken a big back seat to web site updates, unfortunately.
